Hello

“Now if you were trying to think of a catchy name for your band, what would be like, the least catchy thing you could imagine, Metal Doughnut Band, something like that? Indeed. This is Laura Norder”, John Peel.

This is A history of The Metal Doughnut Band in the form of a retrospectively posted blog.

Channel 4 Film 'Magic Hour' (1985) - Performance Within

'Magic Hour' Scene

Yet to determine the exact broadcast date, but here it is on Channel 4.

Update: According to the TV Pop Diaries: Pop Music on British Television 1955 - 1999 website it was shown on Channel 4's The Eleventh Hour on Monday 5th January 1987. Later than expected or this was a repeat?

Channel 4 Film Shoot, Nottingham

Filming took place on this day in an empty Nottingham shop for a scene in a Channel 4 film called 'Magic Hour'. The band played 'Knock on Wood'. Note the careful placement of metal and the choreography to keep the film (almost) penis free.

Apparently, was due to be shown on Channel 4's 'The Eleventh Hour' (link 1, link 2) series around Christmas '85.

Live at Newcastle's Riverside on it's opening weekend

The Metal Doughnut Band headlined on this day - the Riverside's opening weekend/party. In fear of their new licence, the venue physically prevented the band from doing their 2nd 'proper' set.

The band were really disappointed and upset about this, as they didn't get to perform their proper set for the audience, thus denying them the full Metal Doughnut Band experience. Also, it took a great deal of effort to load and transport a (long wheelbase) Mercedes van full of metal to Newcastle and back, not to mention the unloading and preperation of the stage.

For more of the story see the book post.
