Live at Leicester Polytechnic Arena - Review in Printhead magazine

DOUGHNUT METAL BAND  *

Friday November 11th

On Friday the 11th November, Leicester Poly played host to its own Alternative Sounds Society. The few hundred who attended, braved the not too cold weather, were amply rewarded, with the lush sound of Flesh For Lulu + their like, ALTERNATIVE SOUNDS?

However, yours truly missed most of these whilst being both assaulted and entertained, with verve by a religious psychiatrist who proceeded to challenge and coerce me to attend one of his community gatherings. It seemed a strange venue in which to look for converts, but all was explained when the visual and sensual onslaught of the Metal Doughnut Band took the stage.
Unveiling both their instruments and themselves. A strange collection. The sight of which promoted numerous cat calls and shouts of put your clothes on, from the by now well oiled audience. The rest of the band concealed to one side of the stage played hard, fast and rythmically, with more akin to the Residents than Test Dept and S.P.K. this year's latest socialite interest. However, their efforts were in vain hampered by a hopelessy inadequate PA. This could be said to have been a visual triumph. Rather than a musical one, with the immediacey of its anarchic visual approach. A solitary glue sniffer who found himself at the front must have thought himself transported. John and Damian Doughnut beating the tune, their enthusiasm proved infectious to the dwindling audience, some of whom chose to invade their environment and beat out their own tune. Thus ends the scenario for an evenings entertainment.
