Live at Leicester Polytechnic Arena - Review in local fanzine

THE BOMB PARTY / METAL DOUGHNUT BAND
LEICESTER POLY

There was a promising tumout for this quickly arranged gig after the Nottingham Oddfellows cancelation [due to Police and club licence laws] and despite the simultaneous Damned performance at the De Mont the numbers were admirable.
Although the Doughnuts had played before - an enjoyable busking session at St. Martins Bandstand unfortunately cut short by the withdrawal of hte power supply and an opening night party at the new Riverside Arts Centre in Newcastle when they were not permitted to play naked - the Leicester crowd seemed apprehensive as to what to expect. Rumours circulated of probable nudity on stage proved to be correct. Whilst some members of hte band preferred to hide their crude essentials behind bass guitar of black clothing the body of the group left us in no doubt that they were true showmen.
Image is obviously important to the Doughnuts whose embarrasment is party reduced by the strategic smearing of flourescent make-up. (Lester Mercury obviously likes the colour green):
The band produce a decidely tribal sound basically strong bass lines and hypnotic metal bashing interspercsd with sporadic sax and the sight of these painted bodies illuminated by ultra-violet lights pounding metal and crying ‘Out Damned Spot’ can only be reminiscent of a hyperactive Zulu’s outing to Piggott’s scrapyard.
The crowd obviously not familiar with the Doughnut’s songs despite their single on Vuggum records kept a reserved audience over the band with a few braves grooving at the front of the stage. (This crowd seemed to disperse when Damian [surname redacted] the unabashed front-basher jumped into the crowd complete with……oil drum.)
Amidst Glamorous Nights, Concordes Backseat and Imminent, Out Damed Spot and Laura Norder must have had the best reception of the night.
Allin all a Metal Doughnut Band gig can be favourably compared to a crack on the bridge of hte nose with a pair of nunchakas (try finding that in the Oxford Concise):
After much scraping and cleaning of car bonnets washing machines and scaffolding the stage was set for the Bomb Party. …
